Embattled Espada files for retirement checks

THE BRONX - Democratic state Sen. Pedro Espada, Jr. filed for his retirement checks one day before being indicted on embezzlement charges.

Espada and his son surrendered themselves to authorities last week. They are accused of embezzling more than $500,000 from the Soundview Health Center and using it for lavish spending.

The state senator is vehemently denying the charges against him, saying he has complete faith in the justice system.

Should he get his retirement checks, Espada will get $9,000 per year for his service.
