THE BRONX - It will soon be illegal for private-sector employers to ask applicants if they have been convicted of a crime.

The change comes after Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the Fair Chance Act into law on Monday. The bill is meant to not only end discrimination toward those with criminal backgrounds, but to give those who cannot find jobs a second chance.

The soon-to-be law follows a movement called "Ban the Box."

Potential employers can still ask interviewees whether they have a criminal background, but only after the interview process is complete.

The law will go into effect in four months.
