THE BRONX - A South Bronx fire station is celebrating its 100-year anniversary.

Firefighters of Engine 73/Ladder 42 gathered today to receive two plaques commemorating a century of service.

They were joined by friends, family and even some former co-workers.

Some of the firefighters say that celebrating the centennial is bittersweet on the eve of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Despite the darkness, the members of Engine 73/Ladder 42 believe their future is bright.

"There is no doubt the new guys will carry the torch and pass on their knowledge to the next generation," says retired Lt. Joseph Berry.
