THE BRONX - A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in the Bronx today to unveil one of the first blue and green roofs in the nation.

The Osborne Association, a nonprofit organization that works with former prison inmates, unveiled the environmentally friendly rooftop.

The blue and green roof has a water barrier system and plants to absorb rainfall. The system can manage 100,000 gallons of stormwater a year. It was built to help improve water quality in the East River, reduce runoff from the building's roof and reduce sewage overflow.

Building the rooftop created jobs for the formerly incarcerated, and will continue to provide jobs with a future beekeeping business.

The project was funded through a $288,000 grant from the the city Department of Environmental Protection and $400,000 from the Osborne Association.
