Ex-NYC top cop begins federal prison term

WHITE PLAINS - (AP) - Federal authorities say former NewYork City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik has reported to aprison in Maryland to begin a four-year sentence.

Bureau of Prison spokeswoman Felicia Ponce saidKerik surrendered at about 1:45 p.m. Monday at the FederalCorrectional Institution in Cumberland, Md.

The 54-year-old Kerik pleaded guilty last year to tax fraud,lying to the White House and six other felonies.

His steely resolve after 9/11 won him worldwide fame. His careerpeaked in 2004 when he was nominated to lead the federal Departmentof Homeland Security. He admitted that during the vettingprocedure, he lied about his past.

After he was sentenced, he apologized to the nation and said hehoped he would be remembered for his service.
