Ex-state Sen. Espada, son face new tax-evasion charges

Former state Sen. Pedro Espada, Jr. (D-N.Y.) and his son appeared in court today where prosecutors unsealed a 29-page indictment that revealed 10 additional charges

THE BRONX - Former state Sen. Pedro Espada, Jr. (D-N.Y.) and his son appeared in court today where prosecutors unsealed a 29-page indictment that revealed 10 additional charges against the pair for alleged tax evasion.

Espada is accused of filing personal tax returns in which he under-reported his income. His son, Pedro Gautier Espada, is charged with filing falsified corporate returns for a janitorial service, according to the indictment filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.

The additional charges against the pair now include tax and wire fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government. They were first indicted last December and charged with five counts of embezzlement and one conspiracy charge after federal investigators raided their Soundview health clinic.

Both are due back in court for another hearing in June and their trial is expected to start in mid-September. They face more than 55 years in prison if convicted.
