MANHATTAN - Former Bronx state Sen. Efrain Gonzalez Jr. has been sentenced to seven years in prison for federal fraud charges.

Prosecutors say Gonzalez used charity groups to finance a lavish lifestyle worth approximately $600,000. Gonzalez pleaded guilty last year to the charges.

According to the Associated Press, a federal judge called Gonzalez's scheme an "American tragedy." The 62-year-old Bronx Democrat apologized to his family, friends and community before his sentencing.
