Expanded paid sick leave legislation takes effect in New York City

NEW YORK - Legislation that expands the right to paid sick leave for 500,000 more New Yorkers has officially taken effect. 

The bill, which is the first to be signed into law by Mayor Bill de Blasio since he took office in January, requires businesses with at least five employees to provide paid sick time. Previous legislation only applied to workplaces with at least 15 employees. 

Employees must work 80 hours a year to become eligible, and then they will gain one hour of paid time off for every 30 hours worked. The law also allows people to use their time to care for sick family members.

Critics argue that the law will hurt small business owners, but its supporters say that it's a huge step for low-wage workers who shouldn't have to fear losing their jobs because of illness.
