MORRIS PARK - Police are looking for a woman who allegedly stole thousands of dollars from hopeful apartment renters in Morris Park.

The fake apartment broker conned two men and one woman who found her ad on Craigslist for an apartment on Van Nest Avenue in Morris Park, according to police. The victims say when they called the broker, they received a call back from a man who claimed to be the broker's father.

The victims ended up meeting the broker in late February and the three of them gave the woman $5,000 in total to secure the apartment, according to police.

The victims became suspicious when the broker never returned their calls. Some went back to the apartment looking for her.

A tenant who lives at the property says she was confronted by one person who was scammed. "I felt bad for them. They had tears in their eyes, and I couldn't do anything for them except say, 'I'm sorry,'" says Maria Hernandez. She says one person tried to kick in her door and jumped on her vehicle, threatening that if he couldn't eat because he lost his money in the bad transaction, neither would she.

The fake broker is wanted for grand larceny. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
