Family living in squalor faces eviction

MOUNT HOPE - Tenants who are on the verge of being evicted from their Mount Hope apartment say they've been living in deplorable conditions for years.

Tamasita Barran lives at 1822 Davidson Ave. with her two adult children and two children under the age of 9. Barran believes the Mount Hope Housing Company has no right to kick her out since she's suffered for at least four years in squalid conditions.

Barran lives among large holes, peeling paint and rusty pipes. She claims the conditions aggravated her asthma to the point that her constant hospital visits cost her a job.

The building has 142 open violations on file with the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Mount Hope Housing Company is a community development organization that rehabilitates and manages affordable housing. It also provides services to residents, such as computer and GED classes.
