THE BRONX - Family members are demanding answers after a Bronx man allegedly committed suicide while in police custody over the weekend.

Edward Soto's loved ones say officers told them that he hanged himself in a holding cell following an arrest Saturday on burglary charges. The 51-year-old was brought to the 19th Precinct on Manhattan's Upper East Side and found unconscious less than 24 hours later.

A police source told News 12 that NYPD procedures require an officer to be stationed at or near all holding cells, and that belts, shoelaces and any other items that could be harmful are confiscated.

The family claims that authorities are offering very little information about how it could have happened.

The NYPD's Internal Affairs Unit is investigating, but the department has not yet responded to a request for comment.
