THE BRONX - ? Fans gathered at Yankee Stadium to pay respect to owner George Steinbrenner.

Flags were lowered to half-staff at City Hall and Mayor Michael Bloomberg called Steinbrenner a larger-than-life figure..

At the stadium, fans created a makeshift memorial by leaving flowers on top of the team emblem on the pavement.

Many locals even left their Yankees caps and memorabilia in his honor.

The Yankees players will honor him throughout the season by wearing uniforms with ?GS? embroidered onto patches. The organization is planning a public memorial for Steinbrenner but have not released details of the event.
