Farmers market at Jacobi Medical Center opens

THE BRONX - The annual Harvest Home farmers market at Jacobi Medical Center starts today in an effort to create awareness about healthy eating in the borough.

The Bronx currently has the highest rates of diabetes and obesity in the entire city. According to the health department, 12 percent of Bronx adults have diabetes while 30 percent are obese. The Bronx was recently named the unhealthiest county in the entire state.

The farmers market aims to change that by accepting food stamps and other government subsidies to help put healthy produce in every Bronx resident?s hand -- no matter what their income.

The farmers market is open every Tuesday through November from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
