Faulty escalator at BX subway stop irks riders

THE BRONX - Straphangers at the West Farms Square-East Tremont Avenue station say the station's only escalator is constantly out of order, forcing them to climb the stairs.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority crews were at the station Thursday, fixing again the broken escalator after News 12 reported the problem to the Transit Authority.

The escalator brings travelers half way up to the tracks, which are three stories above ground. When the escalator is not working, riders, including disabled people, have to take the stairs to the top.

"Anyone who has a wheelchair cannot access this station," says straphanger George Rodriguez.

Transit officials say in March alone the escalator broke eight times.
