THE BRONX - With summer just around the corner, people need to be careful about protecting their skin from the sun.

The FDA has issued new sunscreen regulations. Waterproof sunscreen has been replaced with 40- and 80-minute water-resistant formulas, which means it is important to reapply after sweating or spending time in the water. Experts also say those going outdoors should always apply a full ounce or shot glass worth of sunscreen on any given body part at least 20 to 30 minutes before going out into the sun so that the sunscreen can reach its full protection.

"Everyone needs to wear sunscreen," says Dr. Adam Friedman, a dermatologist at Montefiore Medical Center. "I don't care what color your skin is; skin cancer does not discriminate."

Statistics show one person is diagnosed with melanoma every eight minutes in the U.S. and one person dies every hour from it. Experts say it is important to remember to keep skin safe not just during the summer, but also throughout the year to help prevent skin cancer.
