MELROSE - Fire investigators now believe a child playing with a lighter may have started yesterday's massive apartment fire on East 149th Street in the South Bronx.

More than 100 firefighters responding to the fire at 225 East 149th St. The fire broke out out around 7:30 a.m. on the fifth floor of the apartment.

Dozens of people, including one child and five firefighters, were taken to the hospital. Fire officials say most of the victims suffered from smoke-related injuries, as thick smoke filled up stairwells and hallways while people tried to escape.

The Red Cross says it has already placed two displaced families in local hotels. Others in need will be helped once they're released from the hospital.
