FDNY issues Fourth of July fireworks warning

THE BRONX - The Fourth of July weekend is here, and the FDNY is encouraging Bronx residents to be safe and stay away from illegal fireworks.Officials say the use of both large fireworks, like M-80s, and smaller fireworks, like Nitro Snappers and sparklers, are illegal. Sparklers can reach temperatures as high as 1,000 degrees.Sgt. Robert Byrnes, of the FDNY, says many illegal fireworks are marketed to young people with colorful wrapping and clever packaging. "They entice or attract children to play with them," he says. "These things burn at high temperatures and start fires."
