HUNTS POINT - Shocked sanitation workers discovered human remains in a Hunts Point waste facility early Tuesday morning, police say.

They say an equipment operator first found body parts in a load of debris inside the Metropolitan Transfer Station at 287 Halleck St. around 4:45 a.m.

Police arrived and ultimately uncovered a woman's leg and torso buried in the trash. They spent much of the rest of the day searching for additional remains.

One of the men at the scene says the transfer station contains waste from business in all five boroughs. The facility acts as a hub for trash collection before it is shipped out to dumps.

Investigators from the NYPD's 41st Precinct and K-9 units were searching for the rest of the body in the station and in garbage trucks.

The medical examiner will attempt to determine the exact cause of death and identify the woman.
