THE BRONX - It's the final day of school before summer break for thousands of Bronx students, but for many public institutions, it's also the final day before shutting down for good.
Jane Addams High School is one of five Bronx schools that the Department of Education (DOE) is closing due to poor performance. The others are Gateway High School, Samuel Gompers High School, Grace Dodge High School and Aspire Prep Middle School.
Another 10 struggling Bronx schools, including Lehman and Banana Kelly high schools, will be replaced in the fall with new names and new staffs.
More than 3,600 teachers, administrators and school aides throughout the city already received pink slips this month as part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to overhaul failing schools and make them eligible for federal improvement grants.
