Fire damages uninsured Bronx River Ave. shops

THE BRONX - An overnight fire destroyed four businesses on Bronx River Avenue, causing thousands of dollars in damages for merchants who are uninsured.

Marcos Sierra, who opened his barber shop three months ago, says he was waiting to build up his business before he could afford insurance. Jose Jimenez says his family store lost at least $125,000 in merchandise in the fire. Both business owners aren't insured and will have to pay out of pocket for the damages.

Jimenez and Sierra hope elected officials will step in and prevent the mom and pop shops from permanently closing.
