THE BRONX - A fast moving two-alarm fire ripped through several apartments in West Farms, displacing at least one family.
It started on the top floor of a six-story building at 915 East 179th St. at around 2:30 a.m. Firefighters were forced to tear a hole in the roof, but had everything under control in under an hour.

Officials say the apartment where it began is no longer livable, and three neighboring apartments suffered extensive water and smoke damage.

Some tenants were initially upset because they said the sprinklers did not go off, but the superintendent says the FDNY shut off the sprinklers to avoid flooding in the hallways. He also has a certificate showing that the system passed inspection in December.

It's not yet clear what sparked the flames, but no injuries were reported.
