PELHAM PARKWAY - Firefighters worked to contain a blaze Monday that tore through businesses at Lydig Avenue and White Plains Road.
Officials say the five-alarm fire started around 8 a.m. in a Laundromat at 2139 White Plains Rd. Thick, black smoke rose as flames quickly spread to 11 other stores.
About 200 firefighters responded to the blaze and remained at the scene for at least four hours. Fire officials say a roof collapse and an elevated train platform that blocked ladders hampered their efforts.
Officials credit a fire wall between two buildings with stopping flames from doing even more damage.
Train service was temporarily suspended in both directions between the Wakefield-241st Street station and the East 180th Street station due to the fire. The MTA says service has resumed with residual delays.
Officials say at least 10 civilians and firefighters suffered smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
