THE BRONX - Hundreds of firefighters in the Bronx rallied today against closures to fire companies.

The group says it wants to remind leaders that closing firehouses could have major repercussions for the borough. When firehouses were closed in the 1970s, more than 97 percent of buildings that caught on fire were lost to damage due to longer response times, according to the group.

The mayor's preliminary budget proposal calls for cutting up to 20 fire companies citywide.
