JOHANNESBURG - South African officials say former President Nelson Mandela is responding positively to treatment after being hospitalized for a recurring lung infection.

The country is asking people of the world to pray for the 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon and his family.

Government officials also say they are ensuring he has the best possible medical treatment and comfort.
