Former state senator awaits judge's decision

THE BRONX - A federal judge involved in the corruption case of former state Sen. Efrain Gonzalez said Friday he needs at least two weeks to decide whether to grant or deny a motion filed by Gonzalez?s attorney.

In 2006, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges after prosecutors say he abused his power by laundering money for personal use. Gonzalez now claims he was mentally coerced by his former attorney into pleading guilty, so his new attorney filed a motion last week to withdraw the plea.

Prosecutors argue his motion should be denied because it took his new lawyer more than two weeks to contact them. They believe it is just another ploy to delay a sentencing hearing.
