Free help available to victims of possible identity theft

THE BRONX - Free help is available today for millions of people at risk for identity theft after the personal information of nearly two million patients and hospital staff members has been stolen.

The Health and Hospitals Corporation said 1.7 million electronic files that contained information from people who went to Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital and their two affiliated health centers over the past 20 years was taken and has not been recovered.

Customer care centers will be open at Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital to help those affected by the loss.

The hospital is offering a year of free credit-protection services to those affected. They say victims are being notified by mail, but an information hotline has been set up at 1-877-412-7148.
