THE BRONX - Opponents of New York's new gay marriage law have filed a lawsuit, one day after the law went into effect.

The lawsuit, filed by New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and a rabbi, claims the state Legislature failed to follow its own procedures and violated the state's open meeting law when proposing the legislation and then immediately voting on it.

The lawsuit also claims that debate was severely restricted for legislators wishing to speak out against the bill on the floor before voting occurred.

New York's gay marriage law went into effect yesterday and so far, hundreds of same-sex couples have been married with thousands more weddings expected.

AP wire services were used in this report.
