THE BRONX - A so-called "carmageddon" has begun for drivers heading across the George Washington Bridge.

The Port Authority shut down three out of four New Jersey-bound lanes on the bridge's upper deck to replace hundreds of steel beams.

The closures will happen during the overnight hours through the end of the year.

Drivers are warned to expect delays of up to 60 minutes on the approaches from the Cross Bronx and Major Deegan expressways.
