NEW YORK - Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the expansion of an anti-unemployment program at Hostos Community College Wednesday.

The state first tested the jobs program in the Bronx, and it will now expand throughout the five boroughs.

Officials say the pilot job voucher system helped reduce unemployment significantly in the Bronx, which had the state's highest rate of unemployment in 2014 at 14.2 percent. It is now 6.1 percent.

The initiative gives private employers state money to hire young people and students for summer jobs. Private companies can receive $5,000 vouchers to hire and train young people to work various jobs throughout the state.

State grant money also funds apprentice programs to train more people to work in construction.

The expansion will cost the state $30 million.
