THE BRONX - Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark announced a gun buyback program Monday, especially for the Bronx.

Officials say Bronx residents who turn in handguns and assault rifles will receive a $200 pre-paid gift card.

"With the gun buyback, we offer opportunity for you to rid yourself and your home of potentially dangerous weapons," Clark says.

The program comes after weeks of NYPD crackdowns on a multistate gun smuggling ring, which brought illegal firearms into the Bronx.

Police commissioner Bratton says the program has been successful since its inception in 2008.

"Whether we prevent suicide, whether we prevent crime, whether we prevent an accidental shooting, each one of these weapons removed from a home is a potential plus," Bratton says.

The gun buyback will be this Saturday, August 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Fellowship Tabernacle of Praise, COGIC, 1234B East Gun Hill Road in Laconia; and Evangelical Garifuna Church, 344 Brook Ave. in Mott Haven.

Officials add it is important to note guns must be carried in a plastic or paper bag or box.

They say you may surrender as many guns as you wish but will only receive payment for up to three guns.

Active or retired law enforcement officers and licensed gun dealers are not eligible to participate.
