THE BRONX - Haitians all across the world are celebrating their Independence Day Sunday.

On New Year’s Day in 1804, Haiti was released from French rule.

To celebrate freedom from slavery they ate squash, something Haitians were previously denied.

Since then, it has become a yearly tradition to serve Joumou, a squash soup that can also contain beef and other vegetables.

Patrons at La Caye in Brooklyn say the soup is to remind Haitians of their history and bring families together.
