THE BRONX - Handicapped residents living in the building at 240 East 175th St. say they've been trapped in their apartments after the elevator broke and are demanding action.

For one resident, she must carry her wheelchair-bound son and aging father, who relies on a walker, up the stairs or take the elevator on the opposite side of the building, climb up onto the roof, across the roof and then down the stairs to reach their side of the building.

The managing company, Mount Hope Housing Company, says the hold-up in repairs is due to age of the elevator and that replacement parts are impossible to find, but repairs will start immediately.

Building officials say they are trying to relocate handicapped residents to first-floor apartments while the repairs are being completed.
