THE BRONX - According to the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, The Bronx has the highest abortion rate in the city, with nearly half of all pregnancies ending in abortion.
According to the latest data, there were 42,000 viable pregnancies in the borough in 2009 and more than 20,000 were terminated. Local religious leaders are now calling for change to bring those numbers down.
Bronx state Sen. Rev. Ruben Diaz is rallying fellow clergy members to talk to their congregations about the issue. However, many pro-abortion rights residents and groups are also speaking out, saying women are capable of deciding what's best for themselves.
In response to the statistics, Planned Parenthood issued a statement saying that they invite others to join them in making sure every young person in the city has access to comprehensive sex education and birth control information.
