Home St. shooting victim shows improvement

THE BRONX - Five days after being shot in the head on her way home from Bronx Latin School, 15-year-old Vada Vasquez was taken off the ventilator Friday.

Vasquez had been in a coma since Monday afternoon, but doctors say she can now breathe on her own.

Police say 16-year-old Carvette Gentile fired the stray bullet that hit Vasquez. According to investigators, the alleged gunman was targeting 19-year-old Tyrone Creighton, who was also wounded.

Four other men were arrested for allegedly acting in concert with Gentile. All five, who are believed to be members of the Gorilla Stone Blood gang, are held without bail on murder charges.
