Homeless in NYC tops 40,000 for first time

NEW YORK - The Coalition for the Homeless has released a report putting the number of homeless New Yorkers at 40,000, a record high for the city.

The advocacy group says people are also staying in shelters for longer amounts of time than ever before and say 17,000 of the total number of homeless are children.

In the last fiscal year, the city spent more than $1 billion on homeless services.
