HUNTS POINT - An organic fertilizer plant in Hunts Point is shutting down this week after years of complaints from residents.

Community members say the New York Organic Fertilizer Company plant on Oakpoint Avenue is a nuisance and health hazard. They have mounted complaints about unbearable stenches emanating from the plant for years.

The plant, which turns sewage into fertilizer, went into full operation 17 years ago.

Many community members say they have suffered respiratory health issues since the plant?s opening.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says a meeting has been planned for early July to discuss how to properly clean and dismantle the site.
