Immigration reform bill stalls in Senate

THE BRONX - Immigrants in the Bronx and the rest of the country looking to become legal citizens have been dealt a setback.Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) pulled the controversial immigration reform bill Thursday. Not enough senators, most of whom were Republicans, voted in favor of limiting debate and speeding its passage. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) accused Democrats of trying to rush the bill. The bipartisan bill would tighten borders and create a system to prevent employers from hiring workers that aren't documented. As many as 12 million illegal immigrants would also have the chance to obtain legal status. The House of Representatives doesn't plan to take up the bill until the Senate is done with it. Senator Reid has said he wants to pass the bill, but it will be difficult due to a full Senate slate.
