THE BRONX - Baseball fans and neighbors of Yankee Stadium are getting excited as the Captain approaches the 3,000-hit milestone.

Fans are counting down the baseball star?s journey to getting 3,000 hits. The ?Jeter Meter? countdown clock is keeping track of every hit and fans have come up with a new dance, the ?Jeterbug? to celebrate. Local bakeries and restaurants have pledged to give out free cake to fans once Jeter makes the 3,000th hit.

Many of the events are being sponsored by the 161st BID at local businesses around Yankee Stadium. Jeter started the 2011 season with 2,926 career hits, trying to become the 28th major league player and first New York Yankees player to reach 3,000 hits all in Pinstripes.
