ALLERTON - A man is dead and his mother is in critical condition after a fire broke out in their Allerton apartment.

Authorities say 24-year-old Jose Baldanado, who was wheelchair-bound, died in a fire that broke out in his fifth-floor apartment on Colden Avenue.

Firefighter Ryan Blackwell, the son of a firefighter who died in the Sept. 11 attacks, rescued Baldano's trapped mother from the home.

The woman was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition.

It took 60 firefighters to get the flames under control.
