THE BRONX - Police say a 43-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after setting his girlfriend on fire.

According to prosecutors, Jose Maldonado turned himself in to authorities after throwing alcohol on 29-year-old Prisila Zapata and then lighting her on fire. The attack happened in front of 2263 Creston Ave. on Jan. 11.

Zapata, who has just returned home after her hospital stay, suffered burns to her face, arms and torso. She says the ordeal has been very emotional for her.

Zapata says she and Maldonado were in an off-and-on relationship for more than a decade, and there were several occasions where he threatened to light her on fire. She says she is not angry with Maldonado, but that she does feel pity for him.

Maldonado is also charged with assault.
