Labor unions rally against budget cuts

THE BRONX - Hundreds of union members and workers held a rally against city budget cuts at City Hall today.

More than 100 different unions were represented. Union representatives say they are fighting budget cuts that could reduce services in the community.

The city budget includes cuts to various agencies, such as libraries, schools, the fire department and senior centers. If the budget goes through, 300 sanitation workers, 2,000 teachers, 700 firefighters and more than 500 correctional officers stand to lose their jobs.

In addition, schools stand to lose $494 million in school funding.

The city budget goes into effect July 1.
