ALBANY - (AP) - New York's leaders have turned to the salestax on clothing and other taxes and fees to balance a budget theyare still developing after missing an April 1 deadline.

Two state officials said one of the so-called 'revenue raisers'under discussion would increase the state sales tax on clothing.One of the officials said the proposal includes three or fourtax-free clothes shopping periods each year, including beforeschool begins in the fall and at the December holidays. Current lawexempts purchases of footwear and clothing under $110 from thestate's 4 percent sales tax.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because of thesensitivity of the talks. No other details were immediatelyavailable.

Democratic Gov. David Paterson told reporters Wednesday severalrevenue raising ideas are under discussion.
