THE BRONX - The state Legislature is agreeing to extend the New York City rent control law until Friday as negotiations continue for a longer term renewal.

The action late Wednesday means no threat to renters protected under the 1946 law. The law was scheduled to expire at midnight.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver seek to strengthen protections for tenants enjoying lower rent intended to help keep the middle class in the city. The Republican-led Senate seeks a simple extension of the law's provisions.

In The Bronx, more than 200,000 tenants rely on affordable housing. Many say that despite the brief extension, they remain very uneasy and say they'll be forced out of their homes due to a spike in rent without changes to the law.

The bill's success or failure is tied to a statewide property tax cap law.
