THE BRONX - One of the men arrested for an anti-gay hate crime back in 2010 pleaded guilty Monday morning to attempted gang assault.

Luis Garcia will be sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison as part of a plea deal.

Authorities say Garcia and six other men were involved in attacking and abusing two teens and a man at a University Heights home in October 2010. Investigators say they burned and tortured their victims because they believed they were homosexuals. Garcia had been accused of wrapping chains around the hands of a victim and punching him repeatedly.

The men were members of the gang “Latin King Goonies,” according to authorities.

Garcia will be formally sentenced on May 5.

Idelfonso Mendez, the gang’s reputed leader, will be in court on April 9 and will be sentenced to 14 years in prison as part of another plea deal.
