THE BRONX - Police say they have arrested a man accused of scamming thousands of dollars from Bronx residents who believed they were donating to a worthy cause.

Investigators say Francisco Alberto Gautreaux-Calcano posed as a Dominican embassy worker and told his victims he was collecting money for charities.

Officials say he accepted donations from people living in some of the poorest areas of The Bronx, telling donors that their money would be used to ship ambulances and fire trucks to the Caribbean nation.

Instead, Calcano allegedly pocketed more than $15,000. The 42-year-old now faces a list of charges, including grand larceny.

The district attorney's office says it is working to get victims their money back.

Any other people who believe they may have been scammed are urged to call the Immigration Affairs hotline at 1-800-566-7636.
