Mary Mitchell Foundation asked to pay for E. Tremont building

(09/24/10) EAST TREMONT - The Mary Mitchell Family Center, a popular community center that has been using a Department of Education-owned building for years in East Tremont, may now have to pay thousands to stay.

In July, the DOE told the school it would have to pay $33,000 just to stay until the end of the month. The department says that the costs associated with maintaining the building are too large to absorb. For the past 10 years, community programs have been able to stay in the building without having to pay. Programs at the center include after-school care for children, karate and dance classes.

Students and community members made signs telling the city "we want our building back." They say the building was meant for the Mary Mitchell Foundation, but was transferred over to the Department of Education years ago.
