THE BRONX - Maurice Barnar has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of Bronx community leader Deanna Bazemore.

Barnar had been convicted in the fatal 2011 stabbing of Bazemore. The community leader was killed in her Fulton Avenue home that she shared with Barnar.

The crime prompted calls for stricter penalties for repeat domestic violence offenders. Barnar had been involved in 11 offenses prior to Bazemore's death.

"I'm happy, very happy," said Jaqueline Bazemore, the victim's sister. "We got what we wanted."
