NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio is crisscrossing the country and facing plenty of scrutiny for it.

The mayor's first stop Tuesday is the nation's capital, which is being paid for by City Hall because he will conduct official business. He then heads west to California with funds from his non-profit, "Campaign for One New York."

However, many New Yorkers are criticizing the need for trips beyond city borders, with some claiming that he's ignoring the needs of his constituents.

De Blasio defended his recent surge in travel by saying that he's moving to influence the national political conversation, which will help people back at home.
