Mayor Bloomberg unveils 2011 budget

MANHATTAN - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced today his 2011 budget that includes across-the-board cuts.

Under the budget plan, 6,700 teachers and about 5,000 city workers will be laid off. In addition, dozens of fire houses and senior centers may be closed in an effort to decrease the city's $3.5 billion deficit.

The mayor, however, says he won't eliminate nearly 900 positions within the New York Police Department, although the proposed budget released in January called for those cuts.

The city is still waiting to find out how much aid it will receive from Albany under the new state budget, which is more than a month overdue.
