HUNTS POINT - The mayor unveiled a plan today that is aimed at lowering the poverty rate.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the start of OneNYC, a sweeping plan for the city that includes bringing thousands of people out of poverty by 2025.
The mayor's plan calls for reducing landfill waste to zero by 2030, adding 4.9 million jobs by 2040 and bringing 80,000 people out of poverty by 2025. De Blasio says you can't have people falling behind if you want a successful city.
One group already helping to accomplish the mayor's plan is the nonprofit The Point. The Point was co-founded by Maria Torres, a longtime resident of Hunts Point. The Point provides services such as after-school workshops and food delivery.
De Blasio is also looking for help from the state. He feels the state should raise minimum wage. The mayor says he is not afraid to take the minimum wage fight to Albany.
